From Japan’s Oldest Onsen to an Island with a Greek Windmill: Get There With the ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass

The ALL SHIKOKU Rail Pass gives you access to all JR Shikoku facilities, including railways, ferries, trams, and buses. These services are available at four different counties in the Shikoku area: Tokushima Prefecture, Kagawa Prefecture, Ehime Prefecture, and Kochi Prefecture. You can choose from a three-day, four-day, five-day, or seven-day pass.

The best way to visit Oboke Gorge, located at Tokushima Prefecture, is by taking the genuine sightseeing specialty train SHIKOKU MANNAKA SENNEN MONOGATARI. The train’s authentic interior was inspired by Japanese aesthetics and decorated with traditional Japanese house themes. Once ensconced, sit back and enjoy beauty both inside and out. Large windows showcase gorgeous landscapes, rock formations, and a V-shaped valley. To ensure you have a most comfortable ride, purchase a reserved seat (Green Class Pass).

Onsen (hot spring) is definitely a to-do in Japan, and when in Shikoku, you must try Dōgo Onsen at Ehime Prefecture. The oldest hot spring in Japan, it is said to have inspired the bathhouse in the renowned Studio Ghibli movie Spirited Away. Dōgo Onsen Honkan (Main Building) is a public bath with a three-story wooden structure. A National Important Cultural Property, it’s been visited by Japan’s prestigious Imperial Family since ancient times. To get here, use the pass and depart from JR Matsuyama Station. Make a transfer at Iyotetsu Railway JR Matsuyama Ekimae Line all the way to Dogo Onsen Station.

If you’re looking for some ocean breeze, head over to Shodo Island in Kagawa Prefecture. Shodo Island’s symbol is the olive tree, which is nurtured by the warm climate. To reach Shodoshima, take the Shodoshima Ferry to arrive at Tonosho, then ride the Olive Bus for sightseeing and at no extra charge. You’ll know you would have arrived when you see a white windmill with sails and olive trees growing all over the island. How cool is that?

At Shodo Island, brooms are available for guests to reenact a scene from the Studio Ghibli movie Kiki’s Delivery Service, which featured the island’s Greek windmill.
